The Refinery

CoreX Energy is advancing plans to develop a new refinery in Utah's Uinta Basin, aiming to process the region's distinctive waxy crude oil. The proposed facility is designed to process 50,000 barrels per day. This refinery will produce diesel, jet fuel, lubricants, and refined waxes for various applications, including cosmetics and food coatings. The project emphasizes environmental considerations by incorporating electrified systems powered by solar energy and efficient, low-emission natural gas, positioning it as one of the cleanest refineries in the U.S.

Utah's Uinta Basin

The Uinta Basin has experienced a surge in oil production, reaching 150-160k barrels per day in 2024, largely due to successful horizontal drilling techniques. However, transportation constraints have limited further growth. Currently, oil is transported by truck to train terminals, but the proposed Uinta Basin Railway—a public-private partnership—aims to connect the basin directly to the national rail network. This 88-mile rail line will facilitate the movement of CoreX's refined products  across the country.

Supreme Court Decision Changes Everything

On May 29, 2025, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 8-0 in favor of the Uinta Basin Railway project, scaling back the scope of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). This decision is expected to expedite infrastructure and development projects by limiting the extent of environmental reviews required. The ruling reversed a lower court's decision, clearing the way for the railway expansion designed to boost Utah's oil production and refined products by connecting the Uinta Basin to the national rail network.

Future Growth

CoreX Energy's refinery project, in conjunction with the Uinta Basin Railway, is poised to enhance the region's economic growth. The integration of advanced technologies and infrastructure developments underscores a significant shift in the Uinta Basin's role within the U.S. energy sector.
